Virtual Learning Plans

IMPORTANT: Please remember that the Higher Ground Academy complete alternative program is NOT designed for  students already experiencing success in traditional institutional (public or private) schooling.   However, any student can benefit from HGA's integrative learning method in subject areas where extra attention is needed.

Virtual Learning Plan I  (VLP-I)

This plan effectively puts your student(s) under the care of Higher Ground Academy (HGA) for their day-to-day schooling.  No other school attendance is required.  Higher Ground Academy takes care of your paperwork requirements to register your student(s) with the state of Delaware Department of Education as attending HGA.

VLP-I includes up to four hours per week of online instruction and guidance by one or more experienced learning facilitators.  It is up to the student to use up his/her hours each week.  Unused hours may not be carried over to a subsequent week.

Students participating in VLP-I must agree to spend a total minimum of four hours, five days per week on their learning plans.  However, there is great flexibility in this schedule.  As long as a minimum of 20 hours per week is reached, learning time may be logged at any hour and on any day of the week.  Activities such as karate lessons or Little League practice/games may be included as physical education hours.  Classes with municipal parks and recreation departments also may be counted as learning time.

Technology requirements for the HGA virtual/hybrid programs may be found here.

Virtual Learning Plan II  (VLP-II)

This plan involves online tutoring only.  Students must be enrolled in a brick-and-mortar school or learning center which reports enrollment and attendance to their state’s Department of Education. VLP-II provides tutoring and homework assistance to public and private school students nationwide.

Service fees are discounted with this plan because service is contracted on a four-session basis.  Contract may be for a minimum of one hour per week for four weeks, or another schedule may be selected (two hours for two weeks, etc.). Contract is completed when four hours are delivered or in four weeks from time of purchase, whichever comes first.

This plan is less flexible than VLP-I, in that tutoring hours must be scheduled. If a schedule change must be made by the student, six hours notice BY TELEPHONE is required, or the originally scheduled hour will be forfeited. There is no refund for unused or forfeited hours.  Tutors will attempt to reach the student at least six hours previous if the tutor suddenly becomes unavailable for a session.  Tutor-cancelled sessions will be rescheduled at no additional cost to the student.

At the time of contracting for the four weeks of service, students will provide the tutoring topic or skill needing to be addressed.  Also, the student/parent must fax or otherwise provide any copies of material available for the tutor at least 24 hours in advance of each scheduled session.

Technology requirements for the HGA virtual/hybrid programs may be found here.

Virtual Learning Plan III (VLP-III)

This is the plan to select when à la carte tutoring sessions are desired.  There is no minimum purchase of hours required.  Individual hours are to be contracted at least 24 hours in advance. Specific goals for the session must be communicated by the student or parent at the time of purchase.  Also, the student/parent must fax or otherwise provide any copies of material available for the tutor at least 24 hours in advance of each scheduled session. Although there are no specific technology requirements, a dial-up Internet connection is not recommended.

All plans are designed so they may funnel into the State of Delaware’s Diploma-At-A-Distance program (optional but recommended) at age 16. Continued oversight by HGA personnel may be arranged from age 16 through graduation from the DAAD program.
